More expense drama..or should that be 'treuliau'?

Yet more scandal on the expenses front - but his time it's not Westminster that I'm talking about. This is far closer to me than that.
The Senedd (Welsh Assembly to you lot..lol) has released it's members expenses for the 08/09 year. It makes horrendous reading.

There are no claims for duck houses or damp-proofing and tbh the 'everyday' expenses of most of the AMs (Assembly Members) is pretty fair. I don't object to the travelling expenses, or really to the TVs and ipods bought out of my taxes....oh no...

What I have a real problem with is the 'Second home allowance'..

Don't get me wrong here - I've travelled the length and breadth of Wales and if you live any further North than Brecon - then that's too far away from Cardiff (home of the Senedd) to make a comfortable drive home. The distance may not be far, but when they say 'A road' in Wales what they really mean is a single lane track that is usually occupied by tractors, sheep or roadworks!

But - I took an example of two AMs - one is my local repesentative and the other is the closest representative of the party I voted for. Both of them also happen to be on my Facebook friends list (convenient ain't it...lol).

I looked up their expenses online - they were released today on the Assembly website.

Huw Lewis (my local AM) claimed just over £23,000
Bethan Jenkins (my nearest Plaid Cymru AM) claimed just over £31,000

Both of them claim a second home allowance - Huw Lewis has a mortgage, Bethan Jenkins rents...
Here's the rub - Huw Lewis lives less than half an hours drive from Cardiff (where he has his second home) and Bethan Jenkins lives less than an hours drive away....

You telling me they need a second home!!!??

I've popped down to Cardiff for a sandwich it's so close....

I asked both of these people why they think they need a second home....

Huw Lewis still hasn't replied, which has pissed me of a bit seeings that he's my local AM - MY representative..

But Bethan Jenkins has....she said - and this is the quote 'I don't think that this is unacceptable'....

Well I bloody do.

She said 'I rent my second property so I don't gain from it.'

Not exactly the point Bethan - it's MY taxes that pay that rent....and I can think of better things to spend it on.

Her messages to me about the issue were childish and condescending she even thought I wasn't aware enough of poitics to know that Huw Lewis and herself represent different parties....Her whole attitude was exactly the same as those 'we didn't break any rules' Westminster lot...

I lost patience and sent her quote to the BBC newsdesk....and an email to her boss.

I'm not surprised by any of this - they are politicians after all - but this is after their expenses were exposed last summer and an official inquiry set up to see if they were spending too much!
God help what they were skimming before.

The results of the inquiry will be released next week - should be interesting..

Anyhoo - rant over - going to hassle them a bit more on FB now...lol

Pandemic Panic

It seems that we are now experiencing the first pandemic of the 21st century. Oh Noes!
Flu jabs all round and a patronising set of adverts that remind us to use a handkerchief - and there's me thinking that sneezing over people and wiping residue over their backs in a lift was perfectly acceptable behaviour!

It does bring up one issue for me though - and that's the resistance level of the western immune system. We are constantly being told that we should keep our houses cleaner and constantly wash our hands and our kids and our dogs in order to prevent any nasty germiness from infiltrating our sanitised lives. Kill all bacteria on everything from your loo seat to your computer keyboard (although maybe that one's ok considering some of the keyboards I've been expected to work on in some places - Urgh). We're turning into a race of people that will not be able to fight off even the smallest of infections because we have never been exposed to anything worse than the odd bit of sterilised compost on the potted plant we bought from Tescos.
We've reduced the effectiveness of antibiotics by overuse and created super infections that are resistant to any treatment.

What happened to the good old days when the saying was 'A little bit of dirt never hurt anyone'?
Gone are the days where kids can play in the mud and eat the odd worm or two - or pet a dog without having to have a bath in anti-bacterial bubble bath afterwards. The human race has survived for long enough without germ free kitchens and handwashing at every turn.

There's pre-washed vegetables at the supermarket for those who want super clean and yet when my Dad brought his home grown lettuce (grown with a good bit of 'natural' compost) a quick swill under the tap would suffice before it was stuck on your plate - and I've never had food poisoning.

We've become ultra-paranoid about our health and far too willing to listen to advertising and tabloid hype about the risks our everyday activities pose.

And yet - on the other side of the coin - we are seeing a rise in the kinds of disease that we have spent the last 40 years trying to wipe out! Measles and mumps are on the rise with Wales suffering an epidemic due to careless - and may I say foolish - parents leaving their children unprotected by refusing vaccines. I have no objection if you don't want to give the MMR - it's up to you as a parent - but for gods sake pay to have the seperate vaccines and stop exposing your child and others to these deadly diseases.

Kids should get dirty once in a while - they should be exposed to a little illness without having pills and potions stuck down their throats. We should all be eating a few things that are a little past their sell by date and who wants to eat anything that's had the flavour sterilised out of it.

I'm going now to rummage around in the flower bed and then eat a little toast without washing my hands and maybe I'll let a little toast fall on the kitchen floor and count to four before I pick it up and pop it happily into my mouth - and then I'll let the dog give me a big sloppy kiss!

In the meantime - if you feel a little ill - take the new pictures on here up to bed with a mug of cocoa and you'll feel better in no time....

and have a little reminder that no matter how prevelant swine flu gets - Bacon is still good!

Viva la revolucion...

It seems as if the government of the UK is about to be crushed under the weight of their own expenses cheque!

And not before time.

Given that I can't have an armed rebellion (we're British after all, we just wave sticks a bit and boo) the next step should be to call a general election - it's the only way they've left us to show our disapproval at their actions.
This government have finally lost the approval of one too many groups of people - they lost the working class when they ceased to be a party for the working people. They lost the anti-war brigade with an unjustified war. They lost the Scottish (long ago) and they are about to lose the Welsh. They lost the rich when they plunged the country into recession by allowing the banking sector to self-regulate. Now they've lost the middle class for taking the piss with their expenses when no-one else can.

As the saying goes - 'You can piss some of the people off all of the time and all of the people some of the time - but you can't piss off all of us all of the time!'

There may not be many opportunities in a democracy for the public to bring down a government - but right now, we have the chance.

A bad enough result for the major parties after tomorrows election will be more than enough for the cabinet to lose faith in Gordon Brown - if he goes then there is no clear successor so there will be a party vote for a new leader and that new leader is going to have to call an election (if he has any sense) and to garner any kind of public support will have to implement the changes we need within and without of government.

So go vote - and vote for your local independants, the raving loonies, the Greens - anyone exept the BNP (I have quite a bit to say about them - which I will - maybe later)...

Let's bring the fuckers down.....

Failing that - how does everyone fancy a march on parliament in the near future? Sod their 'no protest' zone - sod the permissions - we're a democracy and we have the right to tell them what we think....
